Nom porté dans le Lot et le Tarn-et-Garonne. Variantes ou formes voisines : Momméjat, Momméjac, Monméja, Monméjac, Monméjean, Montméja, Montméjat, Montméjean. Désigne celui qui est originaire d'une localité appelée Montméja (également Montméjan, Montméjean). Sens du toponyme : le mont du milieu (le mont "médian"). Il trouve sans doute ses origines dans l'Aveyron, où trois hameaux s'appellent Montméja (communes de Flagnac, Sébrazac et Durenque).
